M.B. Strong would like to publicly thank Chief Derrick Abell for his 31years of service in law enforcement to our community.
We encourage our readers to send him an email thanking him for his service and perhaps include a story of your experience with our MBPD. His last official day is this Friday, August 5th.

Chief Abell became the Chief of Police for the City of Manhattan Beach on January 16, 2018. He began his law enforcement career in 1988 when he was hired by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He transferred to the Manhattan Beach Police Department in 1991.
During his career with the MBPD, Chief Abell became heavily involved with the Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. He went on to serve as the team’s Sergeant and Lieutenant and oversaw critical incidents.
Derrick is a certified Drug Awareness and Resistance Education (DARE) Instructor, Firearms Instructor, and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team Commander.
In May of 2008, Derrick was promoted to the rank of Captain, and in January 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Chief.
In his time at the City of Manhattan Beach, Derrick earned 16 commendations and was awarded “Officer of the Year” in 1999.
With a strong commitment to practicing “Broken Window’s Policing,” he has kept our community safe in these uncertain times and he will be greatly missed.
A quote from his parting speech at City Hall on August 2nd:
“To the staff and the department, we are a family. We’ve been a big part of each other’s lives. I will miss you.” ~ Derrick Abell
We at MBStrong will miss you, Chief Abell. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for keeping us safe and protecting our beloved city. You truly are a man with a servant’s heart.

About MBStrong…
We are MB residents bringing common sense, not politics, to the conversation.
What say you, Manhattan Beach? MBStrong2021@gmail.com
Since our start a year and a half ago, we have remained true to our mission to serve our fellow residents by publishing a newsletter that brings information on issues critical to our MB community and let the voice of the residents be heard by publishing their letters and comments.
We started with 100 readers and now have grown to over 5,400 MB residents reading MBStrong’s newsletter. This is largely due to residents finding MBStrong a noncombative outlet to voice their opinion and make a difference in our community.
