MBStrong's Candidate Scorecard coming this week!
Candidate Forums on Tues. and Weds. Letters from residents. Locations to vote in-person.
Dear MB Residents,
As promised, we have researched the relevant history of the candidates running for City Council who have either served on Council before or are currently serving on Council: Amy Howorth, David Lesser, Mark Burton, and Suzanne Hadley. We have also researched more on the New Voices running for Council: Frank Chiella, Rita Crabtree-Kampe, and Stewart Fournier.
We will be publishing a Candidate Scorecard to help you weed through the ads, campaign slogans, and “rumors” circulating around town about the candidates. We evaluated the candidate’s decisions and positions on the most crucial issues in our city and reviewed their experience, leadership, and responsiveness to the voice of the residents. The Scorecard will reflect which candidates align and don’t align with our positions and values.
The Candidate Scorecard will be published in a Newsletter this week. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, attend one or both of the City Council Forums scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday (see Forum dates below). Bring your questions.
A listing of the candidates can be found in our Candidate Line-Up edition [HERE].

MB Residents Speak…
“To MBStrong, Your efforts are essential and I believe represent the majority of residents in MB. Thank you! -Concerned long-time Resident” 10/3/22
Letters from residents regarding our article that reported messages by School Board member, Jason Boxer, on his MBUSD Social Media account, about sex and children like the one shown immediately below in blue. Read the article [HERE].
“MBStrong has hit it way out of the park in this newsletter!! Well done!!!. You have articulated EVERYTHING perfectly. If the residents of Manhattan Beach do not vote this school board out, the MB school system is done for. I will be recommending people homeschool or look for other alternatives to MBUSD. -M.B.” 10/6/22
“Hi, I can’t help but briefly respond. This is turning my stomach. For me, this is about trust and feeling powerless. I thought this community was immune to all the idiocy we’ve heard about in other communities around the country. Seems I was wrong.
I thought I could trust that our elected officials in MBUSD and/or City Council had our kid’s best interests in mind. Seems I was wrong.
I think we tend to elect people based on our trust in the people in the community. For example, if there are a lot of signs for a person, it must mean they are popular or involved with the school. Also if somebody is very involved, they must be “ok.” Until your newsletter, I didn’t know much about the candidates.
I think we may elect people based on superficial characteristics, such as he/she looks like a nice person. And since they are part of a community, I can trust they should be ok.
For me, all this matters most when it comes to our kids. The kids can be influenced by social media and other outside influences soon enough. Why do we have to accelerate the loss of innocence by electing people that want to expose the kids to some of the ideas you shared in the newsletter? I think our community may need to wake up before it’s too late if it’s not already.
Seems I was wrong about trusting in my community and that makes me feel like it’s going in, what I consider, the wrong direction. I still can’t imagine this is the majority opinion in the community. It seems like the ideologues are pushing an agenda and we may be left powerless going forward.
I don’t usually get involved in political issues, but this one’s more important to me. Thanks for this excellent and thorough message. I am forwarding it to as many people as I can. I hope it helps them see a point of view they may not have considered.
Best, G.H.” 10/6/22
