Measure A adds an additional Parcel Tax of $1,095 on top of the current tax of $225, and it increases annually with an inflation kicker, for 12 years.
If the fact that yard signs opposing the parcel tax ran out in less than 36 hours is any indication of resident pushback, it appears an opposition groundswell is on the rise.

MB School Board Members find an UNFAIR LOOPHOLE!
A survey conducted by the School Board last fall revealed that residents are lukewarm to an additional tax and any proposed new tax hike would fail to meet the required two-thirds majority vote to pass. Survey Results
A two-thirds majority has always been required for the government to impose taxes on citizens. However, a CA court case now allows taxes to be approved with the simple majority of 50% + 1 vote if the measure is proposed by citizens.
The School Board circumvented the intent of the two-thirds majority by collaborating with a citizen’s group and a tax hike is now on the June ballot.
Why is this unfair? Because it allows a small group to do the bidding of the School Board and impose its will of placing an additional tax burden on the entire community.
Who is this small group?
The citizens in the small group are members of the activist group, MB United, founded by Mayor Hildy Stern, Amy Howorth, and many of the former members of the Bruce's Beach Task Force.
The current tax generates $2.5 million ($225/parcel) for the school district. Measure A will generate $12 million ($1,095/parcel) in the first year, and increase every year for inflation.
Measure A is more than 4 times higher than our current tax.
They assure us that a "citizen oversight group" will oversee the spending. We’re not buying it.
To increase the chances of getting 50% +1 of the votes, they exempted seniors 65+ from the tax and are hard-pressing them for their vote, which essentially levies a tax hike on their neighbors with a modest income. SENIORS...PROTECT YOUR NEIGHBORS, PLEASE VOTE NO.
Rental property is NOT exempt and the tax hike will likely be passed onto the renter. RENTERS...VOTE NO.
If your second home is in MB, you will NOT be eligible for a tax exemption. SECOND HOMEOWNERS...VOTE NO.
MB residents gladly responded to the call by the School Board in 2018 when they asked for a 6-year parcel tax of $225. And MB residents also give generously to the MB Educational Foundation(MBEF) to the tune of hundreds of thousands annually.
But this School Board and its citizens’s group have gone too far by asking for too much and pushing it on us with a 50% + 1 vote.
Vote No on Measure A, and vote in a New School Board in November to discuss a reasonable parcel tax.
